December 5, 2013
MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State women's soccer team had three players named earlier this week to the 2013 NSCAA All-Southeast Region team and one player named to the 2013 Datkronics NCAA Division II All-American squad.
Clayton State midfielder Alicia Robinson received the All-America honor from Daktronics and was also named to the NSCAA All-Region squad along with forward Melissa Hetherington and defender Nina Boganes.
"We are thrilled to have Alicia recognized on the All-America team by Daktronics and to have her, Mel and Nina receive the All-Region honor," said head coach Gareth O'Sullivan. "All three had great years and were very consistent throughout our season."Â
The NSCAA awards are chosen by the respective soccer coaches of the NCAA Division II Southeast Region, while the award from Daktronics was selected by the sports information directors from NCAA Division II schools.
Robinson, a senior from Telford, England, was named the 2013 Peach Belt Player of the Year. She led the league with 10 assists on the season and initiated the Clayton State offense that led the PBC in goals scored with 48 on the year. A team captain, Robinson was also named to the 2012 NSCAA All-Region team and was an All-PBC player last year.
The All-American recognition for Robinson is only the third time a Clayton State women's soccer player has received the honor. Nkiru Okosieme was named All-American in 2004 and Olaitan Yusuf received the honor in both 2004 and 2005.
A junior from Burnley, England, Hetherington played in 22 games and started 21 games for the Lakers. She was an All-Peach Belt Conference selection and finished the season ranked third in the Peach Belt with 11 goals on the year. She also ranked third in the league in points scored and had four assists on the season.
Boganes, a freshman from Stavanger, Norway, played in 22 games and started 21 games for the Lakers. She was an All-Peach Belt Conference selection and helped lead the Laker defense to a 1.01 goals against average, which ranked third in the conference.
In 2013, Clayton State captured both the Peach Belt Conference regular season and the PBC Tournament Championships. The squad advanced to the 2013 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer National Championships and entered the event ranked 11th in the nation.
