Azcue places Second at Indoor Nationals in 800-Meters

Birmingham, Ala. – Clayton State runner Ayrton Azcue placed 2nd in the 800m finals of the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships at the national meet being held at Birmingham’s Crossplex facility.

Azcue finished with a time 1:50.65 in the field of eight runners in the NCAA Division II final for the event. Ashland’s Drew Windle won the race with a time of 1:48.75.

A native of Madrid Spain, Azcue was named the 2013 Southeast Region’s Men’s Track Athlete of the Year after breaking the school record in the 800m with a time of 1:50.36.

On the women’s side, Clayton State’s Jessica Matthews competed in the triple jump Saturday but was unable to qualify for the finals. Her best jump in the qualifying round was 37-feet-9 ¼ inches.

A freshman from Monroe, Ga., Matthews was named the Southeast Region’s Women’s Field Athlete of the Year. She entered the NCAA Championships ranked 10th in the nation in the triple jump with a mark of 39-9¾ (12.13m).
