BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Clayton State University track & field teams opened its 2024-25 season at the Birmingham Indoor Icebreaker on Friday. The Lakers brought a lot of energy and started off the season on the right foot with some good results. The Lakers competed against DI powerhouses Ole Miss, Tulane, Memphis, Austin Peay, and Alcorn State just to name a few.
MEN'S SIDE
Early in the day,
Jonah Peters led the Lakers in the sprinting events. Peters finished first on the team in the 60m dash with a time of 7.27 and in the 300m dash with a time of 37.01, while he finished second on the team in the 200m dash with a time of 24 seconds. Peters' time in the 300m is the fourth fastest time in program history.
Rohan Holness also finished in the top 20 in the 300m with a time of 37.21.
The men also saw good results in the mid and long distance races. In the 1000m,
Rakiem Barnes finished 10
th with a time of 2:36.71, which is good for the third fastest time in program history.
Sancho Smith and
Terry Mitchner finished 12
th and 17
th, respectively.
Nehemiah Horton then finished in the top-15 in the mile with a time of 4:38.73 and
Camron Gaddis finished 21
st in the 3k with a time of 9:02.25. Gaddis' time is good for eighth on the all-time list.
The Lakers finished action on the track in the relays finishing 12
th in the 4x400, and sixth and eighth, respectively, in the DMR. The field events were led by
Davonte Jackson. Jackson finished fourth in the triple jump with a final mark of 14.45m. Jackson beat out athletes from DI powerhouse Ole Miss, Memphis, Bethune-Cookman, and Alabama State among other schools. 14.45m is good for a new PR for Davonte.
WOMEN'S SIDE
The women were led by
JaBresha Palmer. Palmer finished first on the team and 24
th overall in the 400m with a time of 61.80. She also led the Lakers and finished 11
th in the 800m run with a time of 2:29.60. Palmer PR'd in both the 400m and 800m.
Rebecca Oji led the team in the 300m dash with a time of 42.48, which was good for 18
th overall. That time is good for fourth in program history. The Lakers also saw success in the distance races. In the 1000m, both
Ivorie Smith and
Marley Tate placed in the top-20 overall with times of 3:13.05 and 3:16.48, respectively. Smith's time is good for second all-time in the race and Tate's is good for third. The Lakers finished action on the track with a top-15 finish in the 4x400 meter relay.
Rionna Byrd and
Iyanna Jordan led the team in the field events. Byrd finished in 25
th in the high jump with a final height of 1.40m while Jordan finished 20
th in the triple jump with a final mark of 10.48m.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Lakers return to action in the New Year as they compete in the Rod McCravy Memorial Invitational on Friday, January 10
th, 2025. The meet is hosted by the University of Kentucky and the meet will be held in Louisville.
