MORROW, Ga. -- The Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) announced its Southeast All-Region selections for men's soccer on Tuesday. The Clayton State University men's soccer program saw three of their student-athletes placed among the two teams.
Earning first-team honors is PBC Offensive Player of the Year
Alex Rodriguez and first-team All-PBC selection
Alexis Iturria while goalkeeper
Mauricio Uribe earned second-team honors. This is the first such honor for Rodriguez and Uribe and the third such honor for Iturria.
A native of Valladolid, Spain, Rodriguez had a terrific season for the Lakers. He led the team and the conference with nine goals and notched the team second-best total with seven assists. In the 1-1 PK win over Converse, Rodriguez assisted on Iturria's goal with 17.7 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Alex scored goals in five straight matches from October 15
th to the 30
th and notched one multi-goal effort against Georgia Gwinnett on September 28
th. He also fired off 42 shots and notched 25 points. Alex was also awarded the PBC Gold Ball as he scored the most goals in the conference.
A native of Hampton, Ga., Iturria, again, had a great season for Clayton State. Alexis earned his third D2CCA All-Region selection in his illustrious career. This season, Iturria racked up a team and conference best 13 assists to go along with seven goals scored. Iturria leads the Laker with 61 shots. Alexis has scored a goal in back-to-back games including the lone goal in the PBC Championship game and the match-tying goal to send the Lakers to overtime against Converse in the Round of 32 game.
A native of Miami, Fla., Uribe had a terrific season in net for the Lakers. In 16 matches, Uribe only conceded 13 goals and made 51 saves. In addition, he pitched six shutouts and picked up 11 wins in net. His goal against average really tells the story of how great Uribe's year as he gave up less than a goal a match (.80). In the 1-1 PK win over Converse, the Laker keeper saved seven shots and only conceded a goal in 110 minutes of play. Uribe and the Laker defensive unit has kept the Lakers in a lot of matches this season.
