Sancho Smith Competed in the 50th Annual CARIFTA Games in The Bahamas

NASSAU, The Bahamas – Clayton State University men's track & field mid-distance runner Sancho Smith competed for his home country of Bermuda at the 50th Annual CARIFTA Games inside the Thomas Robinson Track and Field Stadium this past week.  The Laker freshman ran in the 800m run. 
 
On Sunday afternoon, Smith ran to a second-place finish in the semifinals of the 800m run with a time of 1:56.20.  That time was good enough to compete in the finals on Monday evening. In the finals, Sancho finished fourth crossing the finish line with a time of 1:53.21. 
 
In addition to Smith competing, head coach Christopher Brown, who serves as an At-Large Sports Ambassador for the Bahamas, was on site as a broadcaster for the games. 
 
Smith joins current coaches Jamal Wilson and Christopher Brown who have competed in the CARIFTA Games.  Coach Brown brought home a pair of Bronze Medals in the 400m and 800m races, respectively, while coach Wilson took home three Gold Medals in the games in the high jump. 
 
ABOUT THE CARIFTA GAMES
The CARIFTA Games is an annual athletics competition founded by the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA). The games were first held in 1972 and consists of track and field events including sprint races, hurdles, middle distance track events, jumping and throwing events, and relays. The Games has two age categories: under-17 (under-18 until 2017) and under-20. Only countries associated with CARIFTA may compete in the competition.
