ATLANTA— The Clayton State University track and field teams opened up competition at the Emory Thrills in the Hills Open on Friday afternoon.  After one day of competition, the men's team stands in sixth place out of 22 schools while the women are in tenth.

Cayla Brown got the Lakers off to a good start on the track as she ran to a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.32.  The Laker sophomore was the highest Division I or Division II finisher in the race as she beat out individuals from Georgia State, Montevallo, and Columbus State.  That time also qualifies Brown for the PBC Championships later in April.  Maya Adams and Adrianna Ameer, who finished 12th and 13th also qualified for the PBC Championships with times of 26.02 and 26.14, respectively.

Later on the track, Tanaeya Johnson raced to a fourth-place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase.  Her time of 12:13.82 not only qualified her for the PBC Championships but also broke a school record that was set by Lynnet Kosgei in 2018.

"I am really happy I was able to qualify and break the school record in my first track season here!" said Johnson.  "Of course, there's always room for improvement and I hope to do even better in the remaining meets and in at the PBC Championships."

In the field events, the Lakers saw much success.  In the javelin throw, Carlton Grisson won the event with a final mark of 52.03m.  That mark is also good for a PBC Championships qualifying mark.  In the high jump, Freddie Hawkins took second in the event with a final mark of 1.95m. Adarius Andrews finished nineth in the event with a final mark of 1.85m. To conclude competition in the field events, the Lakers saw success in the long jump.  Ariyonna Jones finished eighth in the women's side with a final mark of 5.05m while D'Eris Jackson finished in fourth place with a final distance of 6.72m.  Jackson's mark was good to qualify for the PBC Championships.
