ATLANTA— The Clayton State University track and field teams competed in the Clark Atlanta Panther Invitational on Saturday. The Lakers finished with a combined score of 159 points and finished in third. Albany State took the team title with 187 points.
The Lakers saw early success on the track starting with the 4x100 meter relay. On the women's side, the team of
Maya Adams,
Cayla Brown,
Kameron Noble, and
Ariyonna Jones finished second with a final time of 48.02. The Lakers beat out Savannah State by ten-tenths-of-a-second. On the men's side, the team of
D'Eris Jackson,
Christopher Hart,
Kelvin Oppong, and
Roderick Winfrey finished in third place crossing the finish line with a time of 43.02 seconds.
Later, on the track,
Jada Warren and
Tanaeya Johnson took fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the 1500-meter run. Warren clocked a time of 5:17.14, while Johnson crossed the finish line in 5:18.33. The Lakers then dominated in the 800-meter run as freshmen
JaBresha Palmer and
Ahlana Failey took the first two places with times of 2:25.03 and 2:29.21, respectively.
Sasha Knowles finished sixth in the race. In the men's 800m race, freshman
Sancho Smith continues his impressive season as he won the race with a time of 1:55.88.
James Kilgore,
Darryl Jefferson, and
Terry Mitchner also took home top-eight finishes.
The Lakers finished the meet with a fourth-place finish in the women's 4x400 meter relay. The team of Knowles, Warren, Johnson, and Failey finished with a time of 4:27.05. In the men's 4x400 meter relay, the team of
Titus Hand,
Rakiem Barnes, Jefferson, and Kilgore finished in third place with a final time of 3:22.66.
The Lakers also had some good performances in the field events. In the men's high jump,
Freddie Hawkins took home second place with a final height of 1.93m.
Carlton Grisson also had a standout performance in the throwing events. Grisson finished in third place in the javelin throw with a final distance of 38.40m. The Laker freshman also finished in fourth in the shot put with a final mark of 12.65m. In the men's triple jump,
Abijah Wilcox and Devonte Jackson finished in third and fourth place with final marks of 13.76m and 13.67m, respectively. On the women's side,
Ny'Asia Green took home sixth place in the long jump and eighth place in the triple jump.
