MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State Athletics Department continues its feature series that highlights members of its Athletics Hall of Fame. This week's spotlight feature highlights Lisa Williams, a member of the second class to be inducted into the Lakers Hall of Fame in 2015.
Arguably the best player in the history of the women's basketball program, she helped lay the foundation for what has become one of the most consistent programs in the country. Playing from 1994-98, she still ranks as the all-time career leader in points (1,415), rebounds (796), defensive rebounds (578) and free throws (306).
During her career, she helped break new ground for the Lakers as the 1994-95 squad went a program best 19-13 and won the Georgia Athletic Conference for the first time in team history. Their 81-70 victory over Georgia Southwestern in the GAC title game also presented another first for the program – a trip to the NAIA National Tournament. That team's 19 wins would remain a record until the 2004-05 season when that year's team made the first of 10 straight NCAA Tournament appearances with a 25-7 record.
Individually, Williams still holds nine additional Top-10 career marks, including second in field goals (539) and field goal percentage (.548), fifth in offensive rebounds (218), sixth in games (113), points per game (12.5) and rebounds per game (7.0), eighth in games started (80) and steals (175) and is tied for tenth in blocked shots (62).
Her single season records still on the books are just as impressive. At the time of her induction, she ranked first in three-point field goal percentage (.443 in 1997-98), third in field goal percentage (.602 in 1994-95), fourth in points per game (16.2 in 1995-96), fifth in field goal percentage (.582 in 1995-96), sixth in defensive rebounds (165 in 1997-98), eighth in field goal percentage (.550 in 1996-97), tied for eighth in field goals (164 in 1995-96) and rebounds per game (8.4 in 1995-96) and ninth in free throws (94 in 1996-97).
Additionally, Williams is tied for the most field goals in a game with 14 against North Georgia on February 24, 1996 and most free throws with 14 vs. Berry on February 12, 1996.
She also led the team in points per game twice (16.2 in 1995-96 and 12.8 in 1996-97), field goal percentage three times (1994-95, 1995-96, 1996-97), rebounds per game twice (8.4 in 1995-96 and 7.4 in 1996-97) and steals (2.0 in 1996-97). Those performances helped her become a three-time All-Georgia Athletic Conference selection with first-team honors in 1995-96 and 1996-97 and All-Freshman recognition in 1994-95.
