BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior
Chris Florence (Newnan, Ga.) produced one of the best performances of his indoor career as Clayton State men's and women's track & field competed at the KMS Open on Sunday, February 16.
Florence was a key member of first place finishes by the 4x200 relay (1-of-2, 1:33.33) and 4x400 relay (1-of-2, 3:23.92) teams in addition to delivering a pair of indoor personal bests as he won the 200-meters (1-of-14, 21.93) and 400-meters (1-of-13, 48.61).
On the relays he would team with sophomore
Gyasi Cockrell (Suwanee, Ga.), freshman
James Kilgore (Milledgeville, Ga.) and junior
Courtland White (Rex, Ga.) in the 4x400 and the sophomore triumvirate of
Churchill Ezeokonkwo (Riverdale, Ga.),
Derrick Ward (Marietta, Ga.) and
Michael Gray (Pooler, Ga.) in what would be a record-setting performance in the 4x200. The latter would be so with it being the first time the men had run that even in indoor program history.
Individually, Cockrell would win the mile ahead of 10 other competitors with a time of 4:32.33 while White placed 3-of-12 in the 800-meters (2:00.54) to round out the top performers.
Clayton State will close out the indoor regular season this coming Saturday, February 22 as they head to the USC Indoor Open. That meet will take place in Columbia, South Carolina and will be hosted by the University of South Carolina.
