NEW ORLEANS, La. – Senior
T.J. Witherspoon (Thomasville, Ga.) capped off his four-year career with the first United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Outdoor All-Southeast Region honor as announced by that organization earlier this week.
Â
Coming off of an indoor campaign that saw him claim All-Region recognition in the 800-meters, Witherspoon delivered an impressive performance in that same event all season long during outdoor action.
Â
Despite missing the first three meets he ran the 800-meters six times and finished in the top four every time. That included a 1-of-24 (1:52.96) outing at the Gulf South/Peach Belt Challenge (4/6) and 1-of-20 at the Don McGarey Invitational (4/27).
Â
He also delivered back-to-back runner-up outings at the Mount Olive First Chance (5/11) and Last Chance (5/12). That saw him finish 2-of-9 (1:52.26) the first day and 2-of-11 (1:53.10) on the second. Witherspoon also placed 3-of-59 at the Emory Classic (3/30) and 4-of-20 in the finals of the 2019 Peach Belt Conference Championship (4/21).
Â
"T.J has had a terrific senior season," said head coach
Mike Mead. "He's battled through some injuries this year and fought hard to earn All-Region honors. I'm very proud of him."
Â
In order to earn All-Region recognition, an individual has to either finish in the top five in their region in individual events or be a member of a relay team ranked in the region's top three.
