ATLANTA, Ga. – Taking on an expansive field that featured teams from all three NCAA Divisions as well as the NAIA and from across the country, Clayton State men's track & field closed out the final day of the Emory Invitational at 21-of-28 on Saturday, March 23.
The Lakers efforts were headlined by a 4x400-meter relay team consisting of freshmen
Michael Gray (Pooler, Ga.),
Churchill Ezeokonkwo (Riverdale, Ga.), sophomore
Courtland White (Rex, Ga.) and junior
Keldren Reddick (Thomasville, Ga.). That group placed 4-of-25 with a time of 3:23.61 and was the second highest Division II finisher.
Individually, freshman
Brian Sims, Jr. (Trussville, Ala.) delivered an impressive 6-of-59 performance with a time of 49.60 in the 400-meters to go with a 10-of-60 outing in the 200-meters (22.47). The latter was his first collegiate competition in that event and he also was part of a 4x100-meter relay that finished 8-of-22 with a mark of 42.66. That group included freshman
Janei Sewell (Newnan, Ga.), senior
Eric Wells-Shiver (Cumming, Ga.) and Ezeokonkwo.
Sewell also added a 14-of-60 performance in the 200-meters (22.63) and 15-of-46 outing in the 100-meters (11.24) while White was 14-of-65 in the 800-meters with a mark of 1:58.81. Reddick came in 21
st in the latter event at 2:00.47 and Ezeokonkwo was 22-of-59 in the 400-meters (51.56). Gray wrapped up the top performances with a 21-of-41 finish in the discus as he hit a distance of 33.20-meters.
Clayton State won't have to travel far as they head right back to downtown Atlanta next weekend for the Emory Classic. That meet will run from March 29-30 and will feature another large field of teams.
