AUGUSTA, Ga. – Clayton State men's soccer earned a pair of repeat award winners with the announcement of the 2018 All-Peach Belt Conference Teams on Thursday, November 1.
Â
Headlining that group was senior defender
Kwaku Dwamena (Lorton, Va.) and sophomore midfielder
Mitro Turunen (Vantaa, Finland), both of whom were named to the Second-Team. For Dwamena it is his second All-PBC honor in as many years following a First-Team selection a year ago while Turunen finds his way back among the honorees after being the 2017 Co-Freshman of the Year.
Â
Both clearly earned their spots on the team this year as they were among the team leaders. Dwamena currently sits with a team leading 15 points and five assists and is tied for the club lead with five scores. He has started all 16 games and his 1,387 minute played rank third on the team.
Â
He delivered his best game of the year with a pair of goals and career-best three assists against Shorter (9/6) and added a goal and assist in a 3-2 win over Georgia Southwestern (9/22). Dwamena would follow that with a goal against North Georgia (9/29), an assist at Erskine (10/3) and a solo score against Emmanuel (10/17).
Â
Turunen has been an anchor in the Lakers midfield, starting all 16 games and logging a team-high 1,419 minutes. In that time he has produced three goals and three assists, including the game-winning goal in a 1-0 decision at USC Aiken (10/27) that put Clayton State into the PBC Tournament.
Â
The versatile second year player also notched a career-high two assists vs. Shorter (9/6) and had goals at North Greenville (9/18) and North Georgia (9/29) as well as an assist in a narrow 3-2 decision over Georgia Southwestern (9/22).
Â
Additionally, twice this season he played the full 110 in a pair of ties, the latter of those being the 0-0 quarterfinal deadlock at UNG (10/30) that put the Lakers into the semifinals of the PBC Tournament.
Â
With their pair of honorees, the Lakers all-time All-PBC selection total grows to an impressive 57 honorees. Those selections also extend a stretch of 19 straight years, dating back to 2000, that Clayton State has had at least one player selected to the All-Peach Belt Conference Team. It is also the 17
th time that the club has had multiple selections in a season.
Â
Clayton State is back in action tomorrow, Friday, November 2, as they face off against Lander in the league's semifinals at 2 p.m. The game is a rematch of last year's semifinal round as well as the match up from three games ago.
