Clayton State Set for 17th Appearance in PBC Tournament in 19 Years; Travels to No. 3 Columbus State

MORROW, Ga. – Following a rare year out of the field, Clayton State (6-5-4, 3-5-2 PBC) returns to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament as they travel to top seeded No. 3 Columbus State (14-0-1, 10-0-0 PBC) on Tuesday, October 30. Game time is set for 6 p.m. in Columbus, Georgia.

The Lakers have qualified for all but two PBC Tournaments since the league began sponsoring women's soccer in 2000 and have appeared on eight of the last nine brackets. In those previous 16 appearances, they have won a total of 12 games, including their first game of the tournament six times (2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2013, 2014).

Twice they have won the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship, doing so in 2005 and 2013. In 2005 they defeated Columbus State 2-1 in overtime and knocked off Georgia College in 2013. In the latter the teams went to overtime tied at 2-2 before Clayton State eventually pulled it out on penalty kicks by a 4-2 margin.

All-time, the Lakers are 3-15 against Columbus dating back to the first meeting on October 16, 2004. Since that 2-1 win, the teams have played at least once in each of the ensuing 14 seasons, with postseason games in 2005, 2008 and 2013.

The first of those in 2005 was a 2-1 overtime Clayton State victory to win the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship and clinch a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in program history.

The only other PBC Tournament meeting would be a 4-0 Columbus State win in the quarterfinals on November 4, 2008. The teams also met in the 2013 NCAA Tournament with the Cougars posting a 1-0 opening round decision on November 15 of that year.

Most recently the Cougars posted a 3-1 decision in Columbus on September 29 and have taken 14 of the last 15 meetings.

The winner of the quarterfinal matchup will advance to the 2018 Peach Belt Conference Semifinals in Evans, Georgia. They will play either No. 4 seed UNC Pembroke or No. 5 seed North Georgia  Flagler at 5 p.m. on Friday, November 2. The championship game will be played at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 4.

There will be both live video and live stats coverage of the game both of which are available on www.ClaytonStateSports.com.
