Laker Women's Soccer Closes out Regular Season with a 2-2 Draw at Lander

Aniyah Vargas scored both Laker goals

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Clayton State University women's soccer team concluded its 2026 Regular Season as they traveled to play Lander University to wrap up a match that started way back on September 18th.  The Lakers and Bearcats ended in a 2-2 draw, ending a stretch of three matches in six days for the Lakers.

There proved to be not a lot of offense to go around in the opening frame as the two teams combined for seven shots.  However, the Lakers jumped on the scoreboard early.  In the 12th minute, Ninni Ringstad and Brook Wells fed the ball to Aniyah Vargas who finished for her fifth goal of the season as the Lakers led, 1-0.  The Lakers kept on pressing the Bearcat defensive unit, who entered this match allowing the fewest goals in the PBC this season.  In the 36th minute, Ringstad flicked the ball up and found Vargas who chipped the ball over the head of the Lander keeper for her second goal of the match made the score, 2-0.  Rubie Kelley made a pair of saves in the first half as Clayton State took a 2-0 lead going into the halftime break.

Lander then stormed back in the early going of the second half.  Overall, the Bearcats controlled the possession and tempo as they outshot the Lakers, 12-3, in the half.  The Bearcats scored two goals in the first 10 minutes and knotted up the score at two apiece.  The Lakers then had a golden opportunity to take the lead.  In the 67th minute, Gabrielle Worthy was streaking up the middle of the field, entered the box and her shot was saved, point blank.  Claire Smith, down the stretch, came up big as she made four saves in the second half.  The two teams finished off the regular season deadlocked at two.
