GREENWOOD, S.C. – A score shortly into the second half would be all the scoring in the game as Clayton State (7-5, 3-3 PBC) dropped a narrow 1-0 decision at Lander (5-4, 3-2 PBC) in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Saturday, October 10.
Â
Over the first 45 minutes, the Lakers fired off 11 shots and turned away eight by the Bearcats to head to the break knotted a 0-0. At the start of the second half, Clayton State would notch two more shots, including a close header from senior midfielder
Maria Marti Bartis (Girona, Spain), before Lander broke through at the 56:13 mark.
Â
At that point, Kristy Ellinger found Taylor Hurst just to the left of the goal, where she was able to find the back net on LU's first attempt of the frame for a 1-0 advantage. The Lakers would tally five more shots over the remaining 30-plus minutes but could not deliver the equalizer.
Â
Hurst and Ellinger, with their goal and assist, respectively, delivered the only points for the Bearcats. Shannon DeSantis played all 90 minutes in goal and earned the shutout with eight saves. She moves to 3-2 on the year.
Â
Held scoreless for the first time this year, junior defender Siobhan Wilson (Essex, England) led the offense with six shots, three on goal, and Marti Bartis posted four shots with three on net. Senior goalkeeper
Charlotte McCormack (Wexford, Ireland) went the distance in goal, allowing just the one score and making eight saves to suffer the loss and drop to 7-5.
Â
The Lakers return to action on Wednesday, October 14 when they host No. 2 North Georgia. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
