ATHENS, Ga. - The Clayton College & State University men's and women's track teams finished their inaugural seasons Saturday afternoon in disappointing fashion at the University of Georgia Invitational, recording just one top- 10 finish on the day.
"Overall, I was disappointed in this season-finale meet," said Clayton State head coach
Mike Mead. "We did not 'pop a good one' to finish what was a progressive year for our program."
Aidita Gibson led the Lady Lakers with a seventh place finish in the 1,500-meter (5:02.26) and a 19th place finish in the 800-meter (2:28.78). Jan Trainor placed 16th in the 400-meter dash (1:08.31) and 18th in the 800m, while
Jessica LeRoy ran a 13:00.56 in the 3,000-meter.
On the men's side,
Levi Myers finished 28th with a school-record time of 2:02.15 in the 800-meter.
Tye Walker and
Steven Parrish placed 34th and 41st in the 1,500-meter and 36th and 44th in the 800-meter, respectively.
"
Levi Myers had the best effort of the day with a team-best in the 800m run, only his second collegiate race at this distance," said Mead. "With a little off-season training, Coach (Hugh) Toro and I believe he can become a solid 800m runner for us next year. Aidita placed in the 1,500m, but did not run to her potential because of a recent illness. Tye continued his consistency in the 1,500m while Jan Trainor ended her brief track career with a solid finish in the 800m."
Clayton State concluded its seven-meet inaugural season with something to build on for the future. The season was highlighted by the second- place finishes by both the men's and women's teams at the Oglethorpe Invitational last week.
"All in all, this was a satisfying first season," explained Mead. "We did not, by any means, set the track world on fire. However, we did a lay a foundation to build upon and hope to see 'the fruits of our labor' next season."
