Augusta Downs Clayton State In Offensive Struggle

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Clayton State University women's basketball team traveled across I-20 to play Augusta University on Wednesday evening.  The two teams struggled, at times, to score but the Jaguars prevailed at the end defeating the Lakers, 48-44. 
 
The two teams settled for 12-10 score after the first quarter. Amiyah Edney-Holmes, Sariya, Henry, Jada Alston, and Jasmyn Burts all tossed in field goals during the quarter.  The offensive struggles for both teams continued into the second quarter as Augusta held a 21-20 advantage going into the halftime break.  Alston led the Lakers with six points and India Dowling-Green led the team with three boards.  The two teams combined for 16-for-57 from the field and 1-11 from three. In addition, the Lakers and Jaguars combined for 26 turnovers. 
 
Halftime: Augusta 21, Clayton State 20
 
The Jaguars opened the third quarter with a five-point lead at 25-20 until field goals by Henry and Burts closed the gap to one at 25-24. The two teams took a 33-31 score going into the final quarter of play.  Augusta extended their lead to seven at 42-35 with under six minutes left in the game.  The Lakers then saw Etaria Gibbons make a layup and Burts hit the lone three for the Lakers in the game.  The score read, 42-40.  The Lakers then knotted the game at 42 with a pair of free throws from Edney-Holmes with 2:50 left in the game. 
 
The Jaguars went onto win the game, 48-44, holding the Lakers with zero points in the final 1:50 of the game.
