AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Clayton State University men's basketball team traveled across I-20 to play Augusta University on Wednesday evening. The Jaguars ended up defeating the Lakers, 78-68.
The Lakers caught fire from the field in the early going of the first half and jumped out to a 15-2 lead.
Emmanuel Jones hit a three while
Jojo Bell,
Aaron Pitts, and
DJ Wright also scored points. Wright then hit a three and Pitts then hit field goals and extended the Laker lead to 20-9.
Christian Chambers then scored the next six points and made the score, 26-13. The Lakers continue to score the basketball at will as Wright buried a pair of threes and made the score, 40-26.
The Jaguars, however, closed the half on a 6-1 run but the Lakers led, 41-32, at the half.
DJ Wright led the Lakers with 13 points while Chambers followed with nine. The story of the half was that the Lakers were 7-for-8 from the free throw line and outrebounded the Jaguars, 25-16. The Lakers also led by as much as 14 points.
Halftime: Augusta 41, Clayton State 32
Jones gave the Lakers the early offensive boost in the second half scoring the first five points and made the score, 46-34. The Jaguars then started to cut into their deficit. After Pitts and Wright tossed in baskets, Augusta went on a 16-1 run and took the lead at 56-52. Clyce hit a layup to end the lengthy run. Both teams then traded blow-for-blow for the next several minutes and made the score, 68-65 with 3:30 minutes left.
The Jaguars ended the game on a 10-3 run and won the game, 78-68.
