AMERICUS, Ga. – The Clayton State University women's basketball team traveled down to Georgia Southwestern for a critical Wednesday night Peach Belt Conference (PBC) matchup. The Lakers and Hurricanes came into play tied for the sixth spot in the PBC standings. GSW went onto defeat the Lakers, 68-62.
The Hurricanes took an early 9-6 lead in the first quarter.
Amiyah Edney-Holmes picked up where she left off on Saturday as she hit a three during that stretch. The Hurricanes ended up leading, 11-10, going into the second quarter.
Nya Young tossed in a layup with 1:50 left in the quarter which proved to be the final basket of the first 10 minutes.
Jasmyn Burts, Ky'leo Worriels, and
Jadah Waite gave the Lakers the early jolt of offense in the second quarter and made the score, 21-11. Clayton State scored the last 13 points at that point in the game. The Laker offensive firepower kept going as
Paige McDonald collected a pair of tip-ins and made the score, 27-17.
Even though the Hurricanes scored four of the last five points of the half, the Lakers pushed out to a 28-21 lead going into the halftime break. Burts led the Lakers with nine points on 4-for-4 shooting and Worriels led the team with five boards.
Halftime: Clayton State 28, Georgia Southwestern 21
GSW started the third quarter off strong as they closed the gap to two at 28-26. Waite then converted an and-one and made a layup and grew the lead back up to seven at 33-26. The Lakers then kept their foot on the gas as
Jada Alston made a pair of baskets and Worriels added a field goal. The score read, 39-29. The Hurricanes then went on an 8-1 run and climbed back and were within three at 40-37. GSW took a slim 47-46 lead going into the fourth quarter. Waite buried a pair of field goals and
Kyla Greene made a three to begin the fourth quarter and the Lakers still trailed, 54-53. The Lakers and Hurricanes found themselves tied up at 57 with 3:10 left.
With a minute and a half remaining, Burts hit a layup and knotted the game at 60. Unfortunately, the Hurricanes eventually pulled away and defeated the Lakers, 68-62.
