Women's Soccer Set to Play Top-Seeded North Georgia in the PBC Tournament on Saturday

The Lakers look to earn their first true PBC Tournament win since 2014

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The Clayton State University women's soccer team (4-11- travels up to Dahlonega to play the top-seeded University of North Georgia Nighthawks on Saturday afternoon.  The Lakers look to pick up their first win in the PBC Tournament since 2019.

PBC TOURNAMENT HISTORY
The Lakers are 11-19-5 all-time in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament.  Those five ties resulted in five PK wins with the last one being in 2019 against UNC Pembroke and North Georgia.  The Lakers are 5-0 in PK shootouts in PBC postseason play.  The Lakers have not won a true PBC postseason match since 2014 against Armstrong State.  The Lakers are 2-4 all-time in postseason play against North Georgia. 
 
BOOK ON NORTH GEORGIA
The Nighthawks beat the Lakers, 3-0, on Saturday, November 1st and they also hold a 15-9-4 all-time series advantage.  North Georgia is led by their plethora of all-conference mentions in Grace McGill, Blanca Cruz, Chloe Diaz, Nina Lopez, and Bailey Oetinger.  The group of UNG players combined for 35 goals and 23 assists.  The Nighthawks also have the Defensive Player of the Year in Alex Clark and two other defensive all-conference selections.  McGill, Lopez, and Kyleigh Drew scored against Clayton State last weekend. 
 
IMPACT PLAYERS FOR CLAYTON STATE
The Lakers are led by the offensive tandem of Aniyah Vargas and Eva Martin. Vargas led the team with four goals and notched a pair of assists.  Martin followed with three goals and two assists.  Overall, the Lakers knocked in 12 goals and notched nine assists on the season.  Karley Perry also provided some offense for the Lakers.  Perry was tied with Vargas for the team lead in shots with 24 and she also added a goal and a pair of assists on the season. 
 
On the defensive side of the ball, the Lakers were led by their keepers Rubie Kelley and Claire Smith.  Kelley, who started every game this season, made 49 saves and amassed a 1.99 GAA this season.  She also faced 122 shots.  Smith, who led the team in saves with 57, was the second half keeper in the entire season.  She amassed a 1.91 GAA.  The two keepers combined for four shutouts and 10 matches of two or fewer goals given up.
