MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University women's soccer team hosted Georgia College & State for its first Peach Belt Conference (PBC) match of the season on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats scored a pair of goals in the final two minutes of the match and took down the Lakers, 3-2.
The Bobcats controlled the possession in most of the first half and outshot the Lakers, 6-4. The defensive unit for the Lakers was busy as
Rubie Kelley made four saves. The Lakers finally got some momentum on the offensive side of the ball. In the 43
rd minute,
Gabrielle Worthy intercepted a Bobcat pass and went top-shelf and scored her first goal of the season. The Lakers took a 1-0 lead.
That score would hold true going into the halftime break.
Halftime: Clayton State 1, GCSU 0
Both teams turned it up offensively in the second half. The Lakers extended their lead early in the half. In the 49
th minute,
Aniyah Vargas sent in a ball that was mishandled by the GCSU keeper and crossed the line for a goal. Clayton State took a 2-0 lead. It did not take long for the Bobcats to cut into their deficit. They knocked in their first goal at the 51
st minute off a corner ball. GCSU kept peppering keeper
Claire Smith as she faced a total of nine shots in the second half. The Lakers did not have any more good scoring opportunities in the half.
The Bobcats kept up the offensive pressure into the late stages of the half scoring goals in the 88
th and 90
th minute as they came back to win, 3-2.
