Laker Women's Soccer Dropped a 2-1 Road Match on Wednesday

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Clayton State University women's soccer team travelled to the mountains of Tennessee as thy played Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday afternoon.  The Railsplitters scored a late goal and upended the Lakers, 2-1. 
 
The two teams played a highly-contested first half with 13 combined shots and 10 combined fouls.  Lincoln Memorial also attempted seven corner kicks in the half. Rubie Kelley was pressured early in the half as she made her first save five minutes into the match but faced five of eight shots in the first 10 minutes.  The score remained at 0-0.  The Lakers saw some good opportunities.  In the 18th minute, both Brook Wells and Laila Ortiz-Nolan both had their shots saved by the Railsplitter keeper.  The score remained at 0-0. 
 
The Railsplitters knocked in the match's first goal at the 32nd minute of the game off a corner ball and took a 1-0 lead.  The Lakers then answered.  In the 37th minute, Eva Martin fed the ball to Aniyah Vargas who found the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season.  The score stood at 1-1 going into the halftime break.

In the second half, Claire Smith was tested right away with a shots but she came up with the save.  The Lakers then had another strong opportunity, in the 67th minute, as Reagan Miller sent in a pair of shots but they were stopped by the LMU keeper.  The score remained at 1-1.  That proved to be the final shots for Clayton State in the duration of the match.  Most of the half was a possession battle until the late stages of the half when the Railsplitters put on the pressure. 
 
Lincoln Memorial scored the go-ahead goal in the 88th minute to defeat the Lakers, 2-1.

  • Both Kelley and Smith saved a pair of shots.
