Women's Basketball Falls in Overtime to Georgia Southwestern

Aaliyah Reid grabbed a career high 15 boards in the loss

MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University women's basketball team took the #23 Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes to overtime but dropped a 67-60 decision inside the Loch on Wednesday evening.
 
The Hurricanes came out firing in the first quarter and took a 18-13 lead going into the second quarter.  Nina Blade, Aaliyah Reid, and Hannah Wright were among the scorers for the Lakers.  However, the Lakers countered with a 22-point offensive outburst in the second quarter.  After GSW scored the first two field goals, the Lakers went on a 19-0 run and made the score, 32-22.  The Lakers caused six turnovers during that stretch.  Deborrah Redmon, Reid, and Devyne Turner scored the final points for Clayton State as they took a 35-26 lead going into the halftime break.

Both teams came out in the second half and struggled to score points as the two teams combined for 21 points in the third quarter.  The Lakers held onto a four-point lead at 43-39 going into the final quarter of play.  The Lakers saw baskets from White, Wright, Turner, and Reid and led by as much as 10 at 57-47 with four minutes left. 
 
However, the Hurricanes would not go away and closed the gap as they chipped away going on an 11-0 run and made the score 58-57.  With 32 ticks left, Reid made a free throw and forced overtime.  In the overtime period, the Lakers were outscored 9-2 and ultimately fell 67-60.  Clayton State failed to make a field goal in the deciding five minutes. 
 
QUICK HITS
  • Reid led the Lakers with a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds.  Six of those rebounds were on the offensive glass. 
  • Wright finished with 10 points. 
  • The Lakers forced 24 Hurricane turnovers.

The Lakers conclude their regular season as they host the Nighthawks of the University of North Georgia for senior day on Saturday, March 2nd at 1:30 p.m.
