Women's Basketball Falls in Regular Season Road Finale on Saturday Afternoon

AIKEN, S.C. – The Clayton State University women's basketball team played their final road game of the regular season against USC Aiken on Saturday afternoon.  The Pacers held off the Lakers, 68-63, at the USC Aiken Convocation Center. 
 
The first half was a tale of two quarters for the Lakers as they exploded for 24 points in the first quarter and led, 24-14 after the first 10 minutes.  Hannah Wright led the Lakers with eight points on 3-for-4 shooting.  As a team, the Lakers shot 10-for-12 from the field at an 83.3% clip and shot 4-for-5 from beyond the arc.  The second quarter as a different story as the Pacers stifled the Lakers offensively and they were only able to muster seven points.  Aaliyah Reid's jumper with 44 seconds proved to be the lone field goal for the Lakers in the entire quarter.  USCA scored 12 of its 20 points in the quarter and took a 34-31 lead going into the halftime break.

The Pacers got off to a hot start to the third quarter as they extended their lead to 39-31. After the Lakers climbed back within three at 39-36, the Pacers answered with a 6-0 run and led, 45-36.  In the final four minutes of the quarter, Nina Blade, Wright, Tamaria White, and Jada Alston all scored but the USC Aiken clung to a 47-45 lead going into the fourth quarter.  The Lakers held the lead for most of the quarter and eventually led by six at 59-53.  However, USC Aiken hung tough as they scored the next eight points and took a 61-59 lead.  The Pacers finished the game on a 7-4 run and won the game, 68-63. 
 
QUICK HITS
  • The Lakers, who still hold the sixth seed in the conference, fall to 9-16 on the season. 
  • Deborrah Redmon led the way with 13 points and eight rebounds while Wright and White followed with 12 and 11 points, respectively. 
  • The Lakers went 19-for-23 from the free throw line. 
  • Clayton State shot 44% from the field. 
  • The Pacers went 23-for-29 from the free throw line which ended up being the difference in the game.  Jentri Worley, alone, went 19-for-21. 
  • USC Aiken grabbed 16 offensive rebounds and out-rebounded Clayton State 36-31.
