Lakers Spoil Lander's Homecoming With a Thrilling 86-84 Overtime Win

The Lakers won their second road game of the season; four starters post double-digit scoring totals

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Clayton State University women's basketball team pulled off a 86-84 thrilling overtime win over the Conference's third-place team Lander University at the Finis Horne Arena on Saturday afternoon.  Four of the five starters for the Lakers posted double-digit scoring efforts. 
 
The Lakers and Bearcats started the game knotted at 13 aside.  The Lakers saw their scoring from Nina Blade, Tamaria White, Jadah Waite, and Sariya Henry.  However, Lander caught fire late in the quarter and led 23-19 going into the second.  The Bearcats controlled the majority of the second quarter and led by as much as 10 at 43-33. However, baskets by Jasmyn Burts and Jada Alston cut the Lander halftime lead to six at 43-37.

Four points by Aaliyah Reid got the Laker offensive production started in the third quarter and they cut the lead to two at 43-41 with 8:30 left. Lander again controlled the pace of the third quarter and outscored the Lakers 18-6 the rest of the way and led 61-51 going into the fourth.  The Lakers behind Reid, Burts, and White turned it on offensively in the fourth quarter.  In the first five minutes, the Lakers cut the Lander lead to four at 66-62.  Alston then made a jumper, and the Bearcat lead was cut to 66-64. With two minutes left and Lander up by five, Blade hit a layup and Waite drained a three with 39 ticks left as the two teams went into overtime tied at 74. 
 
The Lakers started the overtime period on a 5-0 run as Deborrah Redmon knocked in three of the five points.  White led the Lakers with seven points in the overtime period as they went onto win, 86-84.

  • The Lakers improve to 8-13 (6-6 PBC) while Lander drops to 15-7 (8-4 PBC)
  • The Lakers were led by 15 from Waite, 14 from Blade, and 12 from White
  • Reid notched her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 boards.  Five of those rebounds were on the offensive glass. 
  • The Lakers doubled up Lander on total rebounds, 50-25. 
  • Clayton State shot a season-best 47.8% from the field including not missing a shot in OT.

The Lakers conclude their road-trip as they travel over to Columbus State for the Battle for the Real CSU on Wednesday, February 14th.  Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
