Waite Buries a Free Throw with 1.6 Seconds Left to Lift Clayton State Over Clark Atlanta

The Lakers played from behind the entire game but won the game in the final moments

ATLANTA—The Clayton State University women's basketball team earned their second straight win as they picked up a 57-56 win over Clark Atlanta University on Wednesday evening.  Jadah Waite was fouled with 1.6 ticks left on the clock and her free throw lifted the Lakers over the Lady Panthers. 
 
The Panthers jumped out to an 11-4 lead early in first quarter.  The Lakers got it going after Kyla Greene, Nya Young, and Etaria Gibbons all hit field goals and made the score, 13 all. The Panthers took a 15-13 lead going into the second quarter.  The second quarter was dominated early on by Clark Atlanta as they started the quarter on an 11-3 run and led, 26-13.  A three by Waite halted the run.  The Panthers eventually took a 12-point lead at 28-16 but the Lakers finished the half on a 6-1 run and only trailed 29-23 going to the halftime break.

Gibbons and Jasmyn Burts started the third quarter scoring the eight of the first 10 points for the Lakers and made the score, 34-33.  Hannah Wright scored the rest of the points for Clayton State, but Clark Atlanta took a 41-37 lead going into the fourth quarter.  The start of the fourth quarter saw CAU jump out to a 48-39 lead with seven minutes left.  Burts then got the Lakers back into the game as she sparked a 7-3 run and made the score 51-46.  With 2:30 left, Waite hit a jumper and buried a three and Gibbons knocked down a pair of free throws and the Lakers took the lead at 55-54. 
 
With a tick left, the Panthers scored the game-tying basket and made the score 56 all.  Waite then got fouled with 1.6 second left and went to the free throw line.  Jadah buried the first free throw, and the Lakers hung onto win the game, 57-56.  



 
QUICK HITS
  • The Lakers won the game after not leading in the game since they led 1-0 to begin the game.  The 1-0 score came on a technical foul that happened before tipoff. 
  • Waite led the Lakers with 19 points and shot 7-for-9 from the free throw line.
  • Burts followed with 12 points.
  • Gibbons becomes the first Laker this season with double-digit rebound totals as she tallied 13 boards and added eight points. 
  • The Lakers tallied 16 points from off the bench and notched 26 points in the paint.
