DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The Clayton State University women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season taking down Livingstone University, 81-71, to conclude the UNG Nighthawk Classic.
The Lakers jumped out to a 9-4 lead after
Jadah Waite scored five points. The Bears ended up deadlocking the game at nine until
Kyla Greene hit a three making the score, 12-9. At the score, 14-12, Livingstone,
Armani Shaw and Waite hit back-to-back threes and made the score, 18-14. Waite drained another field goal, and the Lakers led, 20-14 going into the second quarter.
The Bears cut into the Laker lead to two points at 22-20 until Burts and
Etaria Gibbons hit baskets and made the score, 27-23. At 27-25, the Lakers went on a 7-0 run and made the score, 35-25. The Bears finished the half on a 9-2 run, but the Lakers still led 37-34 going into the half.
Halftime: Clayton State 37, Livingstone 34
Livingstone took the lead in the early portion of the third quarter and led, 39-37. The Lakers responded with a 11-2 run and led, 48-41.
Nya Young,
Sariya Henry, Waite, and Burts all scored during that run. That run set the tone for the rest of the quarter as the Lakers scored 21 points and led 58-51 going into the fourth quarter.
The Lakers saw their lead grow to 13 after baskets from Henry and
Dazjanae Greene early in the fourth quarter. The score read 66-53. The Lakers kept their foot on the gas as Waite, Burts, and Young all scored points and made the score 76-66.
The Lakers saw big games from Waite and Burts as they picked up their first win of the season at 81-71.
