Men's Basketball Picks up the 82-79 win over Edward Waters

Christian Chambers scored 29 in the win

MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University men's basketball team opened play at the Clayton State Classic on Friday evening hosting Edward Waters University.  The Lakers squeaked out an 82-79 victory.
 
Neither team could get the upper hand over the other in the first seven minutes and the Lakers took a 13-12 lead.  Christian Chambers, Jojo Bell, DJ Wright, Jamall Clyce, and Aaron Pitts all marked points in the early going.  At the score, 13-12, Dashaun Joseph hit a three and Chambers hit seven points, and the Lakers pulled out to a 23-17 lead.  With 5:45 left, the Lakers saw Lay Davis, Wright, Pitts, and Elijah Dates toss in points and made the score, 36-25 with 3:30 left.
 
Despite not scoring in the final 30 seconds of the half, the Lakers led, 41-35 at the half.

The Tigers started the second half on a 6-0 run and tied the score at 41.  Pitts then drained a three-ball and made the score, 44-41.  The team then went back-and-forth for the next few minutes, but the Lakers were knocking down their free throws and led, 56-49.  Clayton State were 5-for-5 from the free throw line during that stretch. They led, 61-49 with 11 minutes left in the game.  Edward Waters then cut their deficit to six at 61-55 going on a 6-0 run. 
 
After the Tigers cut the game to 67-62, the Lakers went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a three by DJ Wright and made the score, 73-62 with 5:40 left.  At the score, 74-64, The Tigers then stormed back with a 13-2 run and eventually led, 77-76 with 40 ticks left. 
 
The Lakers drained six of their last seven free throws in the final moments of the game and hung on and took down Edward Waters, 82-79. 
 
QUICK HITS
  • Chambers led the Lakers with 29 points and made 15-for-17 from the free throw line. 
  • Dates and Davis followed close behind with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
