MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University women's basketball team pulled out a 54-52 victory over its long-time rival, Columbus State University on Wednesday evening.
Hannah Wright drilled a driving layup with five seconds left in the game for Laker victory.
A three by
Tamaria White and a pair of free throws by
Nina Blade kickstarted the Laker scoring in the first quarter. Clayton State took an early 6-0 lead. The Cougars then went on a 10-2 run and went up 10-8. Columbus State ended up leading Clayton State 18-14 after the first quarter.
Blade and
Jadah Waite started the scoring for the Lakers in the second quarter, but the Cougars hung onto a 22-20 lead. After a Cougar three, Wright nailed a pair of three-pointers and the Lakers led 26-25. T
he two teams went back-and-forth until the Lakers took over. With Columbus State up 29-28,
Aaliyah Reid and Waite hit a pair of jumpers as Clayton State took a 33-29 halftime lead.

The Lakers got off to a good start in the third quarter. White and Redmon supplied the early offense as they extended the lead to 37-29. The Cougars then went on a 7-2 run and cut the Laker lead to three at 39-26. Clayton State took a 45-41 lead going into the fourth quarter. After Columbus State cut the Laker lead to two early in the fourth quarter, Waite converted an and-one opportunity and the lead grew to five at 48-43.
The two teams went back-and-forth until the final minute of the game. With the Cougars up 52-51, Redmon hit a free throw and Wright scored the game-winning layup with five seconds left to top Columbus State 54-52.
