MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University women's basketball team fell in a double overtime thriller inside the Loch against Lander University, 78-74. This is only the sixth double overtime game in school history and their first since the 2019-20 season.
Jadah Waite got the Lakers off to a good start in the first quarter with a pair of threes, which made the score, 8-4. The Lakers also saw baskets from
Jada Alston and
Sariya Henry and pulled out to a 13-9 lead going into the second quarter.
Hannah Wright and
Devyne Turner contributed points to open the second quarter as the Lakers led, 20-17. Both teams struggled from the field in the second quarter as the Lakers took a 25-24 lead going into the halftime break.
Halftime: Clayton State 25, Lander 24
The Lakers saw early points from
Nina Blade,
Aaliyah Reid, and Waite to open the third quarter. Clayton State led, 31-29. Both Lander and Clayton State played pretty evenly in the majority of the quarter as neither team gained any momentum over the other. In the closing minute of the quarter,
Jasmyn Burts and Alston buried jumpers and the two teams were tied at 38 going into the fourth.
Waite buried two baskets to start the fourth quarter and made the score, 42-38. Lander then went on a 9-0 run and made the score 47-42 with five minutes left. Burts, Reid, Waite, and
Deborrah Redmon all scored points, to counter that run and the Lakers pulled out to a 51-50 lead. The two teams would be tied at 52 at the end of the fourth forcing overtime.
End of Regulation: Clayton State 52, Lander 52
Lander jumped out to a 57-54 lead to begin the first overtime period but an and-one opportunity by Reid made the score 57 all. Blade scored four the final six points for the Lakers as both teams found themselves tied at 65 at the end of the first overtime period. Lander's Alicia Burgos nailed a layup with a second left to force the second overtime period. Lander, immediately, buried a three to start the second overtime period. Blade then countered with three more points to tie the score at 68.
The Lakers and Bearcats found themselves in a free throw battle to conclude the game, but Lander came out on top of the Lakers, 78-74.
