The Lakers Open 2023 Season with a 3-3 Draw

MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University women's soccer team opened their 2023 season at Laker Field against the Valdosta State University Blazers on Thursday afternoon.  The two teams played to a 3-3 draw.
 
The Lakers got off to a hot start in the match.  In the third minute of the match, Serwaah Danso served up a cross into the middle of the box, hitting Amiah Sprunger-Hightower and scored the match's first goal.  The Lakers led 1-0. The match remained at 1-0 until the Blazers knocked goals at the 24th and 34th minute and took a 2-1 lead.  The Lakers then added another goal before the halftime break.  After an exceptional defensive play by Tahlia Stangherlin, Carrie Consolino knocked in a goal and made the score 2-2. 
 
Each team sent in three shots and the two teams were tied at two at the end of the first 45 minutes of play. 
 
Halftime: Clayton State 2, Valdosta State 2
 
Valdosta State came into the second half with a full head of steam and scored the goal ahead goal in the 49th minute making the score 3-2.  Later in the half, Clayton State scored the equalizing goal.  In the 83rd minute, Julia Hasenecz's long ball to Stangherlin sets up Chloe Flannaghan as she sent in a strike from about 30 yards out scoring her first goal of the season. 
 
Both teams were unable to tally the go-ahead goal as the Lakers and Blazers played to a 3-3 draw.
