MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University Department of Athletics is saddened to learn about the passing of former women's basketball coach A.C. McCullers on Tuesday.

McCullers, who served as the Laker women's basketball coach from 1999-2004, boasted a career record of 62-82 (.430). Those 62 wins are good for the third most in program history.  The most successful campaign for the Lakers, during the tenure of McCullers, was in the 2002-03 season where they went 16-11 including posting a 10-9 record in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC).

Under the direction of A.C., the Lakers had their first PBC All-Conference selection in Joya Collier and saw three others earn that accolade.   He also mentored Apryl Brown, who earned the league's Freshman of the Year honor in the 2001-02 season and Catreia Shaw, who was the first Laker to earn All-America honors in the 2002-03 season.

Current Clayton State women's basketball head coach Kaleena Coleman played under coach McCullers in his final season.  Coleman ended up staying in Morrow, coached alongside Hall of Famer Dennis Cox and later took his place as the head coach in the 2014-15 season.

"I received the sad news yesterday of the passing of Coach McCullers," said head women's basketball coach Kaleena Coleman. "My thoughts and prayers are with his family, especially his wife and daughter. I'm forever grateful for the opportunity he gave me to be here at Clayton State back in 2003. He touched my lives over his coaching career and I'm happy I was able to be one of them."

McCullers was also a very successful high school women's basketball coach in the state of Georgia and more specifically in the Morrow area.  He won four state championships at Morrow High School (1989-91 and 1993) and has amassed well over 900 wins, during his career.  Coach McCullers also was the head coach at North Whitfield and Union Grove High Schools.  Most recently, he was the head coach at Strong Rock Christian School in Locust Grove, Ga.

McCullers was inducted into the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) Hall of Fame in 2020 and served as a chairman of the GACA Hall of Fame Selection and the GHSA State Girls Basketball committees. In addition, McCullers was a floor marshal for basketball at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. A.C. played college football at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga from 1965-68 and received his master's degree from West Georgia in 1980.
