Lakers Conclude the Regular Season Defeating Augusta, 63-56

Clayton State held Augusta to 27% shooting from the field

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Clayton State University women's basketball ended the regular season on a high note as they defeated the Augusta University Jaguars, 63-56.  The Lakers swept the season series with Augusta after losing both matchups last season. 
 
Audrey McElhaney and Diamond Swift kicked off the scoring for the Lakers in the first quarter.  They led 6-4 early. Baskets were very hard to come by for both teams throughout.  Hannah Wright, Laylah Davis, and Jada Moss all dropped in baskets later in the quarter as the Lakers took a 12-7 lead going into the second quarter. 
 
Wright kept up the offensive production for the Lakers as she drained a three to start the scoring in the second quarter, as they led 15-9.  After the Jaguars cut the Laker lead to three at 17-14, McElhaney scored the next five Clayton State points and continued to lead, 22-16.  Augusta then immediately closed the gap to one, scoring the next five points. 
 
Jessica Maye and Jada Francois Lubin made field goals for the Lakers at the end of the quarter as they took a 26-24 lead going into the halftime break.

The Jaguars grabbed the early momentum of the third quarter after scoring seven of the first 11 points.  Augusta took the lead at 31-30.  Davis then hit a jumper for the Lakers as they retook the lead at 32-31.  At the score, 34-33, Jaguars, Clayton State scored six of the next seven points, as the Lakers jumped out to a 39-35 lead.  Jordan Jones nailed a three-pointer during that run.  Clayton State took a 41-38 lead going into the final quarter of play. 
 
Taniya Patrick produced the the Laker scoring in the fourth quarter as they led by five at 45-40.  After a three by Augusta, Davis dropped in a three-ball and then added a layup to push the score to 50-43. 
 
The Jaguars tried to mount a comeback in the final minute of the game, but Davis drained the final six free throws for the Lakers as they went onto win the regular season finale, 63-56.

The Lakers travel to Georgia Southwestern State University and play the Cougars of Columbus State University in the Quarterfinals of the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament on Wednesday, March 1st.  Tipoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. The Lakers earned the second seed while Columbus State is the seventh seed.
