Women's Basketball Advances to the Semifinals of the PBC Tournament with a 75-71 Victory over Columbus State

AMERICUS, Ga. – The second-seeded Clayton State University women's basketball team opened play at the 2023 Peach Belt Conference Tournament with a 75-71 victory over the seventh-seeded Columbus State Cougars on Wednesday at the Storm Dome. 
 
The Cougars got off to a good start in the first quarter scoring 14 of the first 19 points.  Jada Francois Lubin buried a three and Audrey McElhaney made a layup.  The Lakers then went on a 9-0 run and tied the Cougars at 14.  The two teams went back-and-forth the rest of the quarter, but Columbus State lead the Lakers, 20-16.
 
The Lakers started the second quarter on a 6-2 run as the score ran 22 all.  After the Cougars made a layup, McElhaney a field goal and Slaughter nailed a three as the Lakers led 27-26. 
 
At the score 29 all, Francois Lubin tossed in a three and Turner made a field goal as the Lakers took the halftime lead at 34-31.

McElhaney and Jessica Maye produced the scoring for the Lakers at the start of the third quarter as they extended their lead to 38-31.  The Cougars then closed the gap on the Lakers as they scored six of the next eight points and made the score 40-37.  With the Cougars closing in down by one at 43-42, layups by Jada Moss and Jordan Jones and a three-ball by Raven Riley put the Lakers up eight at 50-42.  However, Columbus State ended the third quarter on a 10-2 run and tied the game at 52 going into the final 10 minutes of play. 
 
Davis gave the Lakers the early advantage in the fourth quarter as she drained a pair of field goals making the score 57-56.  Diamond Swift then added a layup the next time down the floor and the Lakers retook the lead at 58-57.  With 5:40 left and with Columbus State up 66-63, Riley sparked a 9-1 Laker run and made the score, 72-67. 
 
The Cougars cut the Clayton State lead to 72-70 with less than two minutes to play but Jasmyn Burts and Taniya Patrick made baskets down the stretch as the Lakers survive and advance to the Semifinals on Thursday winning, 75-71.
