SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Clayton State University track and field teams opened their outdoor season at the Savannah State Eye Opener on Saturday. The men's team finished fourth while the women's team finished third. The day saw great performances from the track and on the field.
The Lakers saw early success on the track. In the women's 4x100 meter relay, the team of
Ariyonna Jones,
Maya Adams,
Kameron Noble, and
Cayla Brown took second place clocking a time of 48.30 seconds.
Camron Gaddis then kept up his impressive freshman season as he finished second in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:11.15. The Lakers then saw a strong showing in the 100-meter hurdles from
Joy McLeod. The freshman sprinter finished sixth in the race with a time of 17.11.
Later, on the track, the Lakers saw see top-five finishers in the 400-meter run. That group was led by Jones who finished second with a time of 58.85.
Adriana Ameer and
Mikayla Osborne followed behind finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. In the men's 400-meter dash,
Titus Hand raced to a second-place finish with a time of 49.18.
Jelani Ameer finished seventh in the event.
The Lakers then found success in the women's 800-meter run as
JaBresha Palmer and
Sasha Knowles finished in second and third place. Palmer clocked a time of 2:27.90 while Knowles finished with a time of 2:30.60. Freshman
Sancho Smith then won the men's 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.28. Smith was one of eight runners that went sub-two minutes.
Rakiem Barnes,
Darryl Jefferson, and
James Kilgore finished fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively, in the race. In the women's 5k, freshman
Jada Warren crossed the finish line third with a final time of 20:34.89.
Tanaeya Johnson finished sixth in the race.
The Lakers finished out the meet, on the track, with a second-place finish in the women's 4x400-meter relay. The team of Jones,
Enesyice Kennemore, Noble, and Osborne finished with a time of 4:03.28. The "B" team of McLeod, Palmer, Knowles, and
Ahlana Failey placed third in the race. The two men's 4x400 meter relay teams finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Lakers also saw some good performances in the field. In the women's long jump,
Ny'Asia Green's final mark of 4.92m was good for fourth place. McLeod finished seventh in the event with a final distance of 4.34m. In the men's triple jump, freshman
Davonte Jackson jumped to a second-place finish with a final mark of 13.76m. In the men's discus, freshman
Carlton Grisson placed fifth with a final distance of 36.89m and followed that up with a third-place finish in the shot put, with a distance of 12.50m. In her season debut,
Shania Riles placed third in the women's discus with a distance of 34.75m, while
Raven Yeadon placed fifth.
The Lakers finished out the field events when
Freddie Hawkins won the men's high jump, tying the school record with a final mark of 2m.
Alfred Dixon and
Adarius Andrews finished tied for sixth.
