COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Clayton State University men's basketball team suffered an 80-61 setback on the road at Columbus State University on Saturday afternoon.
Baqi Lecky and
Brian Coffey II started the offense for the Lakers in the first half as they combined for the first eight points. The Lakers held the early advantage at 8-6. After
Wes Williams made a three-pointer and the Lakers took the lead at 13-12, the Cougars went on a 9-0 run and made the score 21-13. Williams dropped another three-pointer to stop the Columbus State run and made the score 21-16.
Coffey II scored four of the final six points for the Lakers in the half as they went into the locker room down, 31-22. Coffey II led the Lakers with eight points while Williams followed with six on 2-of-3 from behind the arc.
Christian Chambers led the team with four boards in the first half.

In the beginning of the second half, the Lakers saw baskets from Williams, Lecky,
Xavier Joyner, and Chambers. The Cougars were still ahead, 42-33. Joyner and Lecky buried three's for Clayton State. Then the Cougars continued to control the pace of the game and went on a 10-1 run, which extended their lead to 52-34. Lecky's turnaround jumper halted the Cougar run. The Lakers kept fighting throughout the half. At the score 56-39, the Lakers went on an 8-0 run highlighted by three-pointers from
Bryce Weinmunson and Chambers. The Lakers cut the deficit to 56-47. The Cougars then responded by marking 10 of the next 12 points and grew their lead back to 17 at 66-49.
The Lakers saw four players hit double-digit point totals but ultimately the Cougars won the game 80-61.
