MORROW, Ga. – Jessica Maye's mid-ranged jumper with four seconds left in overtime was enough as the Clayton State University women's basketball team defeated the USC Aiken Pacers, 64-63, on Wednesday evening. The Lakers' win gives head coach Kaleena Coleman career win number 150.
Both teams had a hard time getting anything going offensively in the first quarter. The Lakers saw field goals from
Jordan Jones,
Audrey McElhaney,
Jessica Maye in the first four minutes of the quarter. The Pacers then went on to score the next six points and took a 10-6 lead.
Jada Moss, Maye, and
Laylah Davis made field goals down the stretch but the Pacers held onto a 14-12 lead going into the second quarter.
After the Pacers converted an and-one play to open the second quarter, The Lakers went on an 11-3 run and took a 23-20 lead. Davis hit a three during that run. The Pacers then responded with a 9-0 run and retook the lead at 29-23.
USC Aiken took a 29-25 lead going into the halftime break.

The Lakers got off to a good start in the third quarter as they went on a 10-2 run. Maye dropped in six of those points and the Lakers took a 35-31 lead. Clayton State controlled the rest of the quarter as they outscored the Pacers, 7-4, and led 44-37 going into the final quarter. The Lakers outscored the Pacers, 19-8, in the quarter.
The Pacers made a run at the Lakers at the beginning of the fourth quarter as they tallied the first six points and cut the Clayton State lead to one at 44-43. The Lakers did not make a field goal until the 4:30 mark but still hung on to a 48-47 lead.
Davis hit a jumper with 14 seconds left in regulation but a last-second layup by USC Aiken forced the overtime period as the two teams were deadlocked at 53 at the end of 40 minutes.

The two teams went back-and-forth to start the five-minute overtime period as Maye, Davis, and McElhaney all made baskets. The two teams were tied at 58. With 11 seconds left, Jentri Worley made a jumper and put the Pacers up 63-62. Maye buried a jumper with four seconds left in the game as she lifted the Lakers to a 64-63 win over USA Aiken.
