BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In its first meet since December 2
nd, 2022, the Clayton State University men's and women's track and field teams hit the track for the first time in 2023 at the Emory CrossPlex Invitational, on Sunday. The men finished fourth out of 13 teams while the women finished tied for 3
rd out of 15 schools.
The men's side saw some great performances on both the track and in the field. To kick off the first-place finishes for the Lakers was
Nigel Roulhac. Roulhac finished on top in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.71.
Titus Hand crossed the finish line third in the race with a time of 50.68. In the relays, the 4k distance medley relay team of
Darryl Jefferson,
Sancho Smith,
James Kilgore, and
Camron Gaddis finished third with a time of 11:10.13. The Lakers then closed out with a second-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay. The team of Hand,
Rakiem Barnes,
Markeith Horace, and Roulhac clocked a time of 3:25.25.
In the field events, the Lakers saw a great finish for
Davonte Jackson and
Abijah Wilcox in the triple jump. Jackson finished third in the event with a mark of 13.41m while Wilcox finished fourth in the event with a mark of 13.34m. The men's field events ended with Freddie Hawkins,
Alfred Dixon, and
Adarius Andrews going second, third, and fourth in the high jump. Hawkins' final mark was a height of 1.95m while Dixon and Andrews both finished with 1.85m marks.
The women's team also finished with strong performances from the track and on the field.
Ariyonna Jones kicked off the women's action on the track when she went sub one-minute (59.62) in the 400-meter dash, finishing in fourth place. Jones' day was not over yet as she won the 200-meter dash, logging a time of 25.85 seconds. The Lakers also saw an impressive time from
Cayla Brown in the 60-meter dash prelims as she finished with a time of 8.08 seconds, which is currently the fifth fastest time in Laker indoor history. Brown ended up finishing eighth in the finals. The Lakers saw their first victory on the track in the 800-meter run as
JaBresha Palmer edged out Montevallo's Courtney Keeler by 47 tenths-of-a-second with a final time of 2:26.05.
The Lakers also saw successful results in the relays. In the 4k DMR, the team of
Jada Warren,
Ivorie Smith,
Sasha Knowles, and
Tanaeya Johnson finished in second place, clocking a time of 13:38.52. To end the meet, the team of
Ahlana Failey,
Joy McLeod, Palmer, and
Mikayla Osborne finished in third place in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:11.31. In the field,
Ny'Asia Green continued her strong indoor campaign as she won the long jump with a final mark of 5.10m. Green also took the crown in the triple jump with a final mark of 10.64m.
