ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Clayton State women's basketball team earned the season-sweep over Flagler College Wednesday night, winning 70-68 in an overtime Peach Belt Conference matchup.
Trailing 57-61 with under three minutes left, the Lakers closed the fourth quarter with a 5-1 run to send the game into overtime.
From then, Clayton State made four baskets from four different players to outscore the Saints 8-6 in the final five minutes.
The Lakers were led by a pair of double-doubles from
Timi'a Swanson and
Jessica Maye and a 17-point performance by
Audrey McElhaney.
The margin of victory over the last five meetings between the two schools is 2.2. The largest margin of victory by either team during that span came from Clayton State in February 2020 with a 74-71 victory at Flagler.
The Saints opened the game with an 18-point first quarter while the Lakers had just 13.
The second quarter started off slow as Clayton State scored the first basket for either team at 7:01. That sparked a 14-0 run which saw the Lakers take a 27-18 lead with 2:22 left in the first half.
Flagler answered with its own 8-2 run to close the half to trail 29-26.
Clayton State led for just over nine minutes in third until Flagler tied the score in the final minute to send the game into the fourth tied 46-46.
The two teams battled it out in fourth, sending the game into overtime.
Swanson had 15 points and 12 rebounds while Maye scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
The Lakers had 26 points off the bench while Flagler had just two.
McElhaney added 17 points and eight rebounds while going 5-of-5 from the free throw line.
Flagler had a pair of players score over 20 points. Tori Pearce had 22 points, 12 rebounds, nine assists and four steals.
