BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Clayton State men's and women's track and field teams opened their 2022-23 season at the BSC Indoor Icebreaker at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Friday. The Lakers saw multiple PRs and successful performances in both the field and on the track.
On the women's side, the meet started with
Tanaeya Johnson placing ninth overall in the women's 3K clocking a time of 11:09.54. Johnson set a new personal record (PR) in the event and currently sits ninth in program history. In the 60m dash semifinals,
Maya Adams became the third Laker to clock a sub-eight second time as she finished with a time of 7.93 seconds. In the mile run,
Jada Warren crossed the finish line in 19
th place with a time of 5:53.23. In the 400-meter dash,
Ariyonna Jones led the Lakers as she ran her race with a time of 61.79, which is good for 22
nd best.
In the relays, the Lakers took third in the Distance Medley Relay, who was run by Warren,
Ahlana Failey,
Sasha Knowles, and Johnson, crossed the finish line in 13: 52.37. Clayton State finished the meet taking 15
th place in the 4x400 meter relay. The team of
Ivorie Smith,
Enesyice Kennemore,
Joy McLeod, and
Aija Wall ran the relay in 4:20.99.
In the field,
Ny'Asia Green led the Lakers in the long jump with a final mark of 4.95m, which was good for 16
th place overall. Green followed that result up with an 18
th place finish in the triple jump with a final mark of 10.61m.
On the men's side,
Gabriel Oliveras finished ahead of three Division II runners in the men's 3K and fifth overall with a time of 9:06.92. With that time, Oliveras set a new freshman record for the fastest 3k time in program history. In the mile,
Camron Gaddis placed second in his heat with a final time of 4:37.01. Out of the 19 runners, Gaddis finished in ninth.
Nigel Collins, who also ran in the race, finished in 15
th place with a time of 4:56.86. In the 400-meter dash,
Nigel Roulhac led Clayton State and finished in 10
th place with a final time of 49.88 while
Titus Hand followed close behind with a 12
th place finish with a time of 50.11.
Later in the track events,
Darryl Jefferson finished nineth in the men's 800-meter run with a final time of 1:59.37.
James Kilgore finished shortly thereafter crossing the finish line in 12
th place with a time of 1:59.98. In the relays, the Laker Distance Medley Relay, who was run by Gaddis,
Rakiem Barnes, Jefferson, and Oliveras finished second with a final time of 10:57.13. The Lakers closed the meet with a 12
th place finish in the 4x400 meter relay, who was run by Roulhac,
Keith Hicks,
Leonardo Beard, and
Titus Hand, finished with a final time of 3:27.00
In the field,
D'Eris Jackson led the Lakers in the long jump as he finished in 25
th with a final mark of 6.05m.
Abijah Wilcox then led the Lakers in the triple jump and placed ninth overall with a final mark of 13.33m. The Lakers ended the field events with a bang after
Freddy Hawkins took third in the high jump with a final mark of 1.95m.
The Lakers, overall, saw great success and good promise to start the season!
HISTORY WAS MADE
- Cayla Brown ran the fifth fastest 200-meter dash time in program history (26.03), on the indoor list
- Roderick Winfrey turned in the seventh fastest time in the 60m dash, on the indoor list
- Kelvin Oppong turned in the ninth fastest time in the 60m dash, on the indoor list
- Titus Hand's 400-meter dash time (50.11) is the fifth fastest in program history, on the indoor list
- Darryl Jefferson's 800-meter run time is the ninth fastest in program history, on the indoor list
- Freddy Hawkins' high jump height is tied for third-best in program history, on the indoor list
