The Lakers Pulled Ahead Late to Down Lynn to Open the Florida Tech Holiday Tournament

The Lakers went 9-for-10 from the free throw line in the final minutes of the game

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Clayton State University men's basketball team opened play at the Florida Tech Holiday Tournament as they faced off against the Fighting Knights of Lynn University on Sunday afternoon.  The Lakers held off Lynn and won the game, 72-66. 
 
The Lakers got off to a fast start in the first half, scoring the first 13 points of the game. Ricardo Saams Jr. and Wes Williams made threes during that stretch.  After Lynn scored 10 of the next 12 points, Travis Harper II and Christian Chambers drained three-pointers on back-to-back possessions and extended their lead to 22-10.  Saams Jr. then made a layup and made the score, 24-10.  The Fighting Knights then closed the gap on Clayton State.  At the score 27-17, Lynn went on an 11-0 run, and they took their first lead of the game at 28-27.
 
The Lakers were only able to muster four points in the final 3:30 minutes of the half as Lynn took a 37-31 lead going into the locker room.  Saams Jr. led the team with eight points while Jalen Shaw grabbed a team-high seven boards.

Clayton State started the second half with Brian Coffey II making a layup and Saams Jr. converting an and-one opportunity.  The Lakers pulled within one at 37-36.  After Lynn made a pair of free throws, Bryce Weinmunson buried a three and made a jumper.  The two teams were then tied at 41. Later in the half the Fighting Knights led by as much as five, but the Lakers went on a 9-0 run and took a 52-48 lead.  Coffey II converted an and-one opportunity during that stretch.  After Kobie Johnson made a layup, Lynn answered with going on a 9-2 run and led 59-56.  Both teams then went back-and-forth until Clayton State pulled ahead with a little under six minutes left.  The Lakers scored the next six points and took a three-point lead at 61-59. 
 
The Lakers made nine of their final 10 free throws and pulled out a 72-66 victory over the Fighting Knights of Lynn University.
