The No. 9 Spartans Down the Lakers on Friday Evening

TAMPA, Fla. – The Clayton State University women's basketball team traveled down to the Sunshine State and played the No. 9 University of Tampa Spartans on Friday night. The Lakers fought until the end but ultimately fell, 78-69.    
 
Dana Johnson, Diamond Swift, and Raven Riley opened the scoring for the Lakers as they led by a slim margin of 7-6.  Riley buried a three during the early going of the quarter.  Tampa then made four threes in the next several minutes and pulled out to a 17-12 lead.  At the score, 19-12, Hannah Wright and Laylah Davis both drained three-pointers and eventually tied the score at 21.  The Lakers came back from down eight points and went into the second quarter up 24-23, after Riley knocked down a three-pointer in the waning seconds.  
 
The Spartans opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run and led 32-24.  Jada Francois Lubin halted that run with a jumper.  Most of this quarter was dominated by the Spartans as they pulled in front by 12 until the Lakers produced some offense.  The Lakers went on to score the final five points of the second quarter as they still trailed, 42-35 going into the half.  Davis, Riley, and Jessica Maye combined for those five points.

The Lakers saw a spark to open the third quarter as Taniya Patrick, Jadah Waite, and Davis tossed in the first six points and cut the Spartan lead to three at 44-41. In the beginning of the quarter both teams went back-and-forth until the Lakers took the lead with under five minutes left.  After Tampa made a three making the score, 49-45, Audrey McElhaney and Jasmyn Burts combined for the next five points and the Lakers led, 50-49.  Clayton State, then, eventually extended its lead to 53-51.  Then, the final three minutes were all Tampa as they scored the final 10 points of the quarter and went up 61-53 after three quarters. 
 
Tampa kept extending its lead going into the fourth as they then scored the next five points until Davis hit a three.  The Spartans led 66-56.  The Lakers continued to chip away at the deficit and closed the gap to seven at 66-59.  After Tampa scored the next three points, Wright nailed a three-pointer and the kept the Lakers within striking distance at 69-62 with four minutes remaining. With 2:13 remaining in the game, the Lakers saw Davis knock down a pair of free throws and Riley tossing in a three-pointer which cut the Spartan lead to 74-69.
 
Ultimately, the Spartans finished the game hitting their final six free throws and took down the Lakers, 78-69.
