DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The Clayton State University women's basketball team had a tall task in their opening game of the North Georgia Classic on Friday as they played the No. 9 Eagles of Carson-Newman. The Lakers outscored the Eagles 29-14 in the fourth quarter, but fell, 84-76.
The Eagles took over the game from the jump and scored the first 15 points. The Lakers did not see their first points scored until
Jessica Maye made a layup with 3:11 left in quarter. The Lakers fought back as they scored nine of the final 14 points, but they trailed 19-9 going into the second quarter. I'Uana Slaughter, Jordan Jones, and
Taniya Patrick all hit buckets in the final three minutes.
Slaughter marked the first points for the Lakers of the second quarter as she made a pair of free throws.
Diamond Swift then knocked down a three-ball on the next possession and cut the Eagles' lead to 21-14. Carson-Newman then went on a 15-6 run as they knocked down four three-pointers. The Eagles led 36-20.
Patrick, Swift, and Jones all scored points for Clayton State in the final minutes of the quarter, but the Eagles pulled ahead 42-27 at the half. Swift led the Lakers with seven points while Slaughter and Jones knocked in five. Jasmyn Burts led the Lakers with three rebounds.

The Lakers came out of the locker room and scored seven of the first 10 points and made the score, 47-34.
Jadah Waite knocked down a three-pointer. With under three minutes left and after Laylah Davis made a basket, the Eagles went on a 12-5 run to end the quarter and they took a 70-46 lead going into the final quarter. Slaughter made the lone field goal for the Lakers during that stretch.
Raven Riley kicked off the scoring for the Lakers as she drained a pair of three-pointers, but Carson Newman marked three, three-pointers in the first 1:30 of the fourth quarter and went up, 79-53.
Audrey McElhaney and Riley combined to score the next nine Laker points and closed the gap to 79-62.
The Lakers outscored the Eagles, 14-0, in the final four minutes of the game but Carson-Newman ultimately won the game, 84-76. Slaughter, Patrick, and Burts all scored four points during that run.
