McElhaney’s Last Second Shot Lifts Lakers Past Flagler

MORROW, Ga. – Junior forward Audrey McElhaney secured a blocked shot and converted a go-ahead layup with less than a second remaining to give the Clayton State women's basketball team a 64-62 win over Flagler College in Wednesday's Peach Belt Conference matchup.
 
Leading 62-59 with 1:16 left to play, the Lakers were looking for their third conference win of the season. The Saints would come out of the timeout and miss a pair of shots but grabbed the rebound with 30 seconds left to try for another attempt.
 
Coming out of the timeout, Flagler's Tori Pearce banked a 3-pointer to tie the game at 62-62 with 16 seconds left on the clock.
 
The Lakers would advance the ball off their own timeout and setup their final possession.
 
After a Flagler foul, the Lakers would try once again. Hannah Wright would attempt the game winner, but her shot was blocked with four seconds on the clock. McElhaney would grab the rebound, make a move and drain the layup with 0.7 seconds left to play.
 
Flagler would inbound the ball, but time ran out on the Saints as the Lakers prevailed with the win.
 
Coming off two consecutive forfeit wins, the Lakers were well rested and had a full lineup for the first time all season.
 
It was a slow start for both teams as the scoreboard showed 7-2 in favor of Clayton State with 4:39 left in the first quarter.
 
The Lakers built the lead and led 19-8 after the opening 10 minutes.
 
The second half was nearly flipped as Flagler outscored Clayton State 18-9. The Lakers would lead 28-26 at halftime.
 
Timi'a Swanson led all scorers with 19 points while McElhaney added 18. The duo each had nine rebounds while Swanson added five steals.
 
Clayton State led for nearly most of the third until the Saints took the lead with 2:50 left and used a 7-1 run to close the quarter to lead by eight with just the fourth to play.
 
Flagler would go up by nine at 9:37, but a 13-0 run gave the Kaleena Coleman '06 led Lakers a 57-53 lead with 3:56 remaining.
 
From there, the two teams duked it out until the final buzzer sounded.  
 
Clayton State had 15 bench points while Flagler had just six. Taniya Patrick had seven points and five boards while Hannah Wright chipped in with eight.
 
Jadah Waite had five points, seven assists and six rebounds.
 
All 13 players stepped foot on the court for Clayton State.
