GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Clayton State men's basketball team lost 71-67 at Lander University Saturday afternoon in a Peach Belt Conference matchup.

The loss is the Lakers third-straight in conference play.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair until Lander took control midway through the haf, leading 26-15 at the 7:43 mark. The Lakers rallied to cut the deficit by five with 4:12 left and ended up trailing 37-31 at halftime.

Four players scored in double figures with Kobie Johnson and Wes Williams each scoring 13 apiece. Johnson added seven rebounds and four assists.

Clayton State opened the second half with a 12-2 run to storm back and take a 43-39 lead. The Lakers extended its lead to six with 11:22 left to play, but Lander quickly erased the deficit and took the lead at 51-49 with under 10 minutes to play.

The two teams traded the lead for the remainder of the game. The Lakers led by one with 2:12 left, but a Lander 3-pointer gave the Bearcats its final lead of the game and ended the Clayton State chances at picking up its second conference win of the season.

Xavier Joyner scored a season-best 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including hitting three 3-pointers. Jalen Shaw added 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Ricardo Lynch scored 10 points and had five rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

As a team, Clayton State shot 40.9% from behind the arc.
