PREACHTREE CITY, Ga. – The Clayton State men's soccer team survived a second-half rally from Georgia Southwestern, winning 3-2 in Monday's Peach Belt Conference matchup.
Leading 3-0 early in the second half, the Lakers (3-3, 3-3 PBC) seemed to be on their way to a comfortable finish and even the season series 1-1 against the Hurricanes (3-3, 3-3 PBC).
GSW beat the Lakers 2-1 in Americus, Ga. earlier this season.
Two goals in a span of 11:33 brought GSW back into contention and made for an interesting finish.
Brad Kay scored the game's first goal in the 29th minute after collecting a save from a
Langston Blackstock shot and finishing into the open net.
The Lakers added their second goal not two minutes later after a
Geo Rios free kick from just outside of the box found the top-left of the goal to give Clayton State a 2-0 lead with just under 15 minutes left in the first half.
Clayton State controlled the opening half, outshooting GSW 9-2 and attempting four corner kicks.
Mitro Turunen scored the eventual gamewinner with off a header after
Niall Swan delivered a beautiful cross.
The Hurricanes eventually found the back of the net at 56:13 and added their second goal at 67:46.
GSW held a 6-5 shot advantage in the second half but finished with only four shots on goal to Clayton State's seven.
The Lakers added to their corner kick advantage in the second half with six while GSW had only one.
Alexis Iturria and Turunen each had three shots while Blackstock placed both of his shots on goal for a team high.
The win places Clayton State and Georgia Southwestern in a tie for the fourth spot in the league standings.
