AMERICUS, Ga. – Jada Francois Lubin scored a career-high 29 points but the Clayton State women's basketball team lost 79-78 in overtime to Georgia Southwestern in Wednesday's Peach Belt Conference matchup.
Neither team led by more than eight points after the 5:29 mark in the opening quarter as the lead changed 15 times throughout the contest.
Wednesday's matchup was a stark contrast to the first meeting, when the Lakers (7-4, 7-4 PBC) won by 19 on January 20.
Playing in their second consecutive overtime game, Clayton State jumped out to a 9-0 lead and led 11-4 at the 5:52 mark before GSW (8-4, 6-3 PBC) battled back and cut the lead to 16-13 and trailed after the first quarter.
The Hurricanes scored the first four points of the second quarter as both teams traded the lead. Neither team led by more than three points during second frame.
Francois Lubin's 29 points were the most by a Laker this season and more than doubled her previous career-high of 17 points. The senior out of Miami added seven rebounds and five steals, both tying career-highs.
Francois Lubin scored eight of the first 11 points for Clayton State to start the second half as the Lakers pulled ahead 39-33. The Lakers maintained a lead until GSW went ahead with 3:40 minutes left in the third.
The lead traded numerous times before the Hurricanes closed the quarter with a 5-0 run to lead 55-51.
Audrey McElhaney registered her first double-double of the season with a 13-point, 10 rebound effort while playing 38 minutes. The junior added three blocks and two steals.
The Hurricanes scored four-quick points to lead by eight and would not trail during the fourth. Clayton State tied the game three times in the final 2:45 and scored with 25 seconds left after a McElhaney layup to tie the game 67-67 and send the game to extra time.
After a pair of GSW free throws started overtime, Francois Lubin scored her final points of the game to tie the score at 69-69. Clayton State then took a 75-74 lead with just over a minute to play.
Clayton State would trail 79-76 with 16 left on the clock and pulled within in one after
Kerry Watson scored a layup with eight seconds to play, but the Lakers could not score again as GSW took the win at home.
Timi'a Swanson scored eight points and had five rebounds while
Jonnise Poole also scored eight with four boards.
COMING UP:
- Clayton State travels to Georgia College on Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. matchup before heading to Augusta on Monday.
- The Lakers then host Young Harris on Wednesday, February 24.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Francois Lubin and GSW's Lex Chatman each scored 29 points.
- The Hurricanes had three players with 10 rebounds.
NEWS AND NOTES:
- Clayton State had 20 bench points to GSW's seven but was outscored in the paint, 44-40.
