Huge Fourth Quarter Leads Women’s Basketball Past UVA Wise

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A pair of double-doubles from Audrey McElhaney and Timi'a Swanson and a 19-point fourth quarter helped the Clayton State women's basketball team to a 66-50 win over UVA Wise in Friday's season opener.  
 
Playing in the Southeast Region Crossover at Flagler College, the Lakers found themselves in a tight battle throughout the first three quarters.
 
Leading 46-44 at the start of the fourth, the Lakers used a 16-1 run to put the game out of reach and led 61-45 with 3:27 left in the game.
 
The Cavaliers went 1-of-13 in the final 10 minutes as Clayton State raced to the win.
 
Swanson led all scorers with 15 points and added 10 rebounds, two assists and four steals. McElhaney contributed 13 points and 12 boards.
 
Taniya Patrick scored 10 points and had seven rebounds in her Laker debut.
 
A Jadah Waite 3-pointer just 31 seconds into game gave the Lakers an early lead which they extended to 8-3 just two minutes into the game. The Cavs would look to close the gap, but Clayton State would lead 17-9 with 2:41 left in the quarter.

UVA Wise would then go on an 8-2 run and trailed by only two points after the first 10 minutes.
 
Clayton State maintained its lead throughout the second quarter and led by as many as 11 points with 2:20 left, but again, the Cavs rallied trailed 33-25 at halftime.
 
The Cavs chipped away at the lead in the third quarter and led at the 5:40 mark. The Lakers would tie the game back up at 4:34 and took their final lead with just under three minutes left to play.
