Clayton State Women’s Basketball Remains Perfect At Home With Win Over Ga. Southwestern

MORROW, Ga. – Senior Timi'a Swanson turned in another 20-point game while junior Audrey McElhaney scored 19 points to lead the Clayton State women's basketball team past Georgia Southwestern, 84-65, in Wednesday's Peach Belt Conference matchup in The Loch.
 
Clayton State (4-1, 4-1 PBC) jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead after five Georgia Southwestern (4-3, 2-2 PBC) turnovers and held the lead for the remainder of the game.
 
The Hurricanes eventually settled in and trailed 15-10 with 4:57 left in the opening quarter before seeing themselves only down by three after the first 10 minutes. Ga. Southwestern scored the first basket in the second and trailed by one, but Clayton State regained control and led by nine at halftime.
 
Wednesday's game marked the third 20-point game this season for Swanson as the senior had a team-high 20 points while pulling down eight rebounds. She added five assists, marking a career-high in that category.
 
Clayton State wasted no time in extending their lead and led by as many as 26 with 10 seconds left in the third quarter.
 
The Lakers continued the momentum in the fourth and saw their smallest lead of the quarter at 6:19 with the score 70-52.
 
McElhaney added nine rebounds to her 19-point scoring effort.


COMING UP:
- Clayton State's Saturday game against Augusta has been postponed. The Lakers return to action against Young Harris on January 27.
- Clayton  State then returns home on January 30 for a matchup with Flagler College.

TURNING POINT:
- Clayton State jumped out to a 10-0 lead and led wire-to-wire.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- In addition to Swanson and McElhaney, Kevanika Brown scored 12 points while Jadah Waite added 10.
- Kerry Watson put together a 7-point, four-rebound, six-assist and one-steal performance.
- Praise Russell contributed with eight points.
- Ga. Southwestern's Lex Chatman scored a game-high 27 points.

NEWS AND NOTES:
- The Lakers scored 38 points in the paint, 32 points off of turnovers and 50 bench points.
