Clayton State Cages Mountain Lions In Wednesday's Conference Matchup

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Led by the duo of Timi'a Swanson and Audrey McElhaney, the Clayton State women's basketball team led wire-to-wire in a 64-42 win over Young Harris in Wednesday's Peach Belt Conference matchup.

With the win, the Lakers now lead the overall series 16-1 and have won 14 straight over Young Harris.

Clayton State (5-1, 5-1 PBC) scored off a McElhaney jumper in the first 16 seconds of the game and built a quick 6-0 advantage to set the tempo for the game. The Mountain Lions (2-2, 2-2 PBC) cut the lead to three, but the Lakers extended the lead and led 17-7 after the opening 10 minutes.

McElhaney finished the game with 12 points, eight rebounds one assist and three steals.

The second quarter went the Lakers' way once again as Clayton State outscored Young Harris 24-13. Leading 17-9 at 9:40, Clayton State used four 3-pointers, a pair of free throws and a fast-break layup to build a 33-14 advantage.

The Lakers would close the half with a Jadah Waite jumper and a 21-point lead. Swanson had seven of her 15 points and five of her eight rebounds in the second.

This marked the first game that Swanson started this season. The senior is fifth in the league with 16.0 points per game.

Clayton State has owned the second and third quarters this season, outscoring their opponents 235-175.

Halftime wouldn't slow Clayton State down as the Lakers scored four points in the first 31 seconds of the second half which prompted a Young Harris timeout.

The Mountain Lions were finally able to slow down Clayton State and cut the lead to 15 after the third quarter.

The final frame was a low scoring affair with both teams combining for 19 points.  

It was a total team affair as all 10 Lakers scored at least two points.

COMING UP:
- The Lakers return home on Saturday for a matchup against Flagler before hosting Georgia College on Wednesday, February 3.
- Clayton State then travels to Francis Marion on Saturday, February 6.

TURNING POINT:
- The Lakers scored the first six points of the game and led 17-7 after the first quarter.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Swanson had a 27 +/- while Kerry Watson had a 20 +/-.

NEWS AND NOTES:
- The Lakers had 26 points of turnovers, 28 points in the paint and 23 bench points.
